Reactor Sizing Calculator (CSTR)
About Reactor Sizing (CSTR)
Reactor sizing is a critical step in chemical process design. For a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR), the volume is determined from the flow rate of reactant, reaction rate constant, concentration, and desired conversion.
The formula for CSTR sizing is:
V = (FA × X) / (k × CA0 × (1 – X))
Where:
FA = Molar flow rate (mol/s)
CA0 = Initial concentration (mol/m³)
X = Conversion fraction (0–1)
k = Rate constant (1/s)
FAQs
Q: What type of reactor does this calculator apply to?
A: This calculator applies to Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTR).
Q: What if I need Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) sizing?
A: A different integral formula is required for PFR. This tool currently supports CSTR.
Q: Why is conversion (X) important?
A: Conversion specifies how much reactant is consumed and directly affects reactor size.
